Modi arrives for airport launch
RAJEEV RAVIDAS -, TT, 24 Sep 2018, Gangtok: Prime minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Sunday to inaugurate Sikkim's first airport at Pakyong on Monday.
A helicopter carrying Modi landed at Libing near Gangtok around 4.30pm and he was received by governor Ganga Prasad, chief minister Pawan Chamling and Union minister Jitendra Singh.
Modi will stay at Raj Bhavan on Sunday night.
Although Modi will formally inaugurate the airport, about 30km downhill from Gangtok, on Monday, the commercial operation will begin only on October 4. A 78-seater SpiceJet plane from Calcutta will land at Pakyong at 10.55am and return 20 minutes later on that day.
The prime minister is also scheduled to address a public meeting at Pakyong immediately after the inauguration of the airport. There is no other official programme lined up for Modi before his departure for Bagdogra en route to Delhi.
