Leopard 'scare' in tea estate
TT, Jalpaiguri: Tea workers stayed away from work after some of them apparently spotted pugmarks of a leopard in the Mahapraphu tea estate on Tuesday.
Sources said most of the workers, including women, got frightened and left the bags they were carrying to bring tealeaves. "I had plucked around two kilos of leaves when some women workers raised an alert. We all rushed and saw pugmarks of a leopard. None of us were ready to work in the garden, apprehending that the animal might attack. We stopped work and returned home," said Chandra Roy, a worker.
A team, led by Sanjoy Dutta, range officer of Belakoba, inspected the plantation. "It appears that a female leopard is straying around with two cubs," he said.
The estate, in the Manthani area, is around 15km from Jalpaiguri.
