Landslide on NH-31A cuts off parts of Jalpaiguri from Siliguri
On Tuesday morning, a landslide occurred at Mongpong on National Highway 31A.
Along with the landslide, the situation was further aggravated owing to the road sinking. Bagrakot and neighbouring areas of Jalpaiguri district were cut off. Traffic was diverted via Gajoldoba and Jalpaiguri town.
The PWD National Highway Division 9 took up the task of clearing the debris and repairing the road. "We worked on a war footing.
At around 6 pm, the road was restored and opened up for vehicular movement," stated Ajay Singh, Executive Engineer, PWD, NH, Division 9.
MeT office reports predict heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. Even neighbouring state Sikkim has borne the brunt of heavy rains.
Numerous landslides were reported from different areas of West Sikkim.
Roads were blocked in various places.
The house of one Gyan bahadur karki of Lowere Yangtey under Yangthang constituency was washed away rendering the family homeless. The family lost livestock in the landslide also.
