Karmapa expected to visit Sikkim on October 21
SUJAL PRADHAN, EOI, Gangtok, 22 Sep 2018: The 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje is finally expected to arrive in Sikkim on October 21.
It was a long-standing demand of Buddhists in Sikkim that the head of the Karma Kagyu sect visits Sikkim ever since his arrival from China in 2000; but the Indian government had denied him permission, presumably under Chinese pressure.
A tour programme of the Karmapa released by the office of the Chief Minister on Saturday said that he would stay in Sikkim for 10 days. During his stay, he would visit Phodong and Ralung monasteries and Tathagata Sthal and also bless devotees and followers.
He would return to Dharamsala on November 1.
Now the Union Home Ministry has lifted the restrictions on him to visit Sikkim, but the Karmapa has still been debarred from visiting Rumtek, the main seat of Karma Kagyu sect. In a letter, Pawan Chamling has invited the Karmapa, who is in New York, to visit Sikkim.
