Aug 15, 2018, Santiniketan: A free health centre for the poor that Somnath Chatterjee had set up here and named after mentor Jyoti Basu closed down on Tuesday for the "time being", uncertain about its monthly funding of Rs 80,000 that came from the former Lok Sabha Speaker.
Chatterjee passed away on Monday. He had set up the Jyoti Basu Seva Kendra in October 2010, months after the former chief minister died.
Sushil Chowdhury, a local businessman who looks after the health centre on behalf Chatterjee, said: "The budget to run the health centre is Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per month. Somnathbabu used to give the money by cheque every month. As he is no more, we have decided to close it down for the time being. We will talk to his family members regarding the financing of the health centre."
CPM leaders said despite being expelled from the party, Chatterjee had named the centre after Basu as he had great respect for him.
Physician Surajit Saha, who tended to patients with three staffers, said: "The management informed me that centre would be closed as Somnathbabu has passed away. Patients will definitely suffer."
