SC notice to Centre, WhatsApp

TT, New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked WhatsApp and the central government to respond to a petition seeking appointment of grievance officers and compliance with the country's tax laws by the US-based messaging service.
Justices R.F. Nariman and Indu Malhotra posted the matter for further hearing after four weeks.
Advocate Viraj Gupta, who appeared for the NGO Centre for Accountability and Systematic Change, said WhatsApp had so far failed to appoint even a grievance officer and comply with tax laws as Delhi High Court had directed in August 2013.

WhatsApp, the lawyer added, had so far also not bothered to take any step to prevent spread of rumours through its messaging services.
