Romanian detained on Nepal border

The Romanians arrested in Delhi after being brought to Calcutta

TT, Calcutta: A Romanian detained on the India-Nepal border on Wednesday could be the kingpin of the ATM skimming racket in the city, according to police.

"If this is the person we think he is, then he is the mastermind of the racket," said an officer in Lalbazar.

The Romanian, identified only by his surname Nana, was detained by customs officials after his description matched with one of the three persons for whom police had issued look-out notices on Tuesday.

The suspect will be brought to Calcutta for interrogation. He will be arrested if his identity is confirmed.

Two Romanians arrested in Delhi are already in police custody in Calcutta for their alleged involvement in the ATM fraud.

Both had been to Nepal more than once in the past few months.

A team from Lalbazar on Wednesday interrogated a Romanian lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail. He had also been arrested in connection with a card cloning racket .

"It appears that a Romanian gang targeted ATMs in Calcutta to collect the money needed to bail out their countryman in Tihar," an officer said.
