Pass-fail system should return in classes V-VIII, feels committee
It may be mentioned that the committee that was constituted for this purpose on Friday, was directed to submit a report in this regard within seven days.
State Education minister Partha Chatterjee has made it clear that the government is in favour of bringing back the pass-fail system but has not yet finalised the classes in which it will be introduced.
Sources in the Education department said that the report of 34 pages have recommended three examinations in a year and has also categorised the role that the teachers need to play in the examination process.
"The report will be presented to the Chief Minister and a final decision in this regard will be taken by her," an official in the state Education department said.
As per the committee's recommendations, the final examination should be held in November-December and if a candidate fails in it, he/she will have to wait for another year. If a student fails in three subjects he/she will be deemed as failed and will have to repeat in the same class for another year. The recommendation further states that the teachers will be held responsible if a student fails in three or more than three subjects and a reply will be sought from the teachers of the subjects in which the student fails. It has also suggested vigil on the part of the Education department to curb the tendency of private coaching among the teachers. The committee has also recommended reducing the burden of books and change in the question pattern during the examination.
Union Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar had said that the states are free to decide whether they would bring back detention system or continue with no detention. Most of the states including Bengal are bringing back the system.
