Minor girl held on suicide abet charge
TT, 23 July 2018, Jalpaiguri: A minor girl has been arrested on charges of abetting a youth to commit suicide in Jalpaiguri.
According to sources, Souptik Mondal, a first year college student, had an affair with the girl for past four years but they broke up in February this year.
The youth used to call the girl and would send her messages even after the break-up, said a source.
On July 6, the 18-year-old youth consumed poison unable to accept the break-up, the source added.
Souptik was first rushed to the Jalpaiguri district hospital and then shifted to a private nursing home in Siliguri. Later, his family took him to Delhi where he died on July 16.
"We have no idea why Souptik took such a step. As we started from Delhi, I opened his cell phone and found that he was upset with the break up. Even before consuming poison, he had sent a message to the girl, mentioning that he is dying. The girl, in her reply, told him to die," said Shanti Mondal, the youth's father.
"It is due to the girl's instigation that my son committed suicide. I want appropriate punishment for her," the father added
As the news spread, the girl reached the police station on Saturday evening and surrendered.
Police said the girl has been arrested following a complaint by Souptik's father.
"The girl said that she never instigated the youth to take such a step. We have initiated a probe and are collecting information," said police officer Biswasroy Sarkar.
On Sunday, the girl she was produced at a special court in Jalpaiguri. The court ordered that she would be sent to a home. The accused girl would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board of the district on Monday, the source added.
Souptik was a student of Ananda Chandra College in Jalpaiguri.
