Sikkim's Pakyong Airport gets license
MP | Kolkata: Pakyong Airport in Sikkim has achieved another milestone by getting the aerodrome license from the DGCA to start flight operations.
Until now Sikkim was the sole state in the country that did not have an airport.
People travelling to Sikkim had to take a flight to Bagdogra airport, situated in Darjeeling and then undertake a road journey of around five to six hours. The Pakyong Airport is set to become the 100th operational airport in the country when it will be commissioned. SpiceJet has been granted permission to fly to Pakyong from Kolkata under the civil aviation ministry's regional connectivity scheme.
Airport construction work has been completed overcoming various hurdles due to geographical constraints. Indian Air Force Dornier 228 aircraft made maiden landing on March 5 this year paving the way to start flights by other commercial airlines.
In continuation, SpiceJet Q 400 proving flight has made successful trail landing on March 10 to get acquainted with the terrain of Pakyong airfield. On May 4, another
milestone has also been achieved when the airport received the aerodrome license from the DGCA which will enable AAI to start flight operations very soon.
