Student gang-raped in north Bengal
TT, Alipurduar: A Class X student on way home with a friend was allegedly raped by some youths after she rejected their "proposals" to get married to her companion "then and there" or have a drink with the strangers.
The 16-year-old is in "trauma" and in hospital, her family said. The youths are on the run after the incident on Monday night on the outskirts of Alipurduar town.
The gang of eight intercepted the girl and her friend and took them to a nearby ground where they demanded Rs 10,000.
When the girl and her friend told them they didn't have the money, the youths asked them to get married "then and there" or have a drink with them. "Both declined. Two of the youths then raped the girl. The boy was gagged, tied and held by the other six," said a source.
A. Ravindranath, the Alipurduar police chief, said a search had been launched for the suspects. "The girl's statement has been recorded," the SP added.
