Mamata remembers Shiva Kumar Rai on his 99th birth anniversary
SNS Web | New Delhi | April 26, 2018 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday paid tributes to former Chief Minister Shiva Kumar Rai on his 99th birth anniversary.
The Chief Minister in a tweet said, “Sincere tribute to Nepali writer, Sahitya Academy winner and former Minister of West Bengal Shiva Kumar Rai on his birth anniversary”.
He was the first Gorkha minister in the state of West Bengal after becoming a deputy minister in 1952.
Rai was very active in politics and was affiliated with the All India Gorkha League. In 1948, he was elected as an MLA from the erstwhile Jorebungalow constituency to the West Bengal Assembly. He was the Deputy Labour Minister of West Bengal from 1952 to 1957. Rai died on 22 July 1995.
He had won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for his collection of short stories Khaharey.
