
Defying Down's syndrome
SNS: With a small chin, slanted eyes, poor muscle tone, a flat nasal bridge, a single crease of the palm, and a protruding tongue due to a small mouth and relatively large tongue, these children and adults stand out in a crowd.
Other common features include:a flat and wide face, a short neck, excessive joint flexibility, extra space between big toe and second toe, abnormal patterns on the fingertips and short fingers. One comes across them off and on in almost all the public places and sometimes in family circles.
Struck with Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21, their lives widely differ from the rest of us. The Down syndrome is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate intellectual disability The average IQ of a young adult with Down syndrome is 50, equivalent to the mental ability of an 8- or 9-year old child,but this can vary widely. Small wonder, everyday is an uphill task. But they have not given up. Come Saturday, they seek to amply demonstrate between 4.00 and 11..00 pm at Nazrul Tirtha (New Town).
Unfazed by the disease that is part of their existence, these children will exhibit their efforts in an art and craft exhibition, participate in cultural performance and take part in a drum jam session as well. Jointly organized by Transcendent Knowledge Society. South Kolkata Parasmnoni together with Julian Day New Mission, the function will be a clear pointer to the ability of humans even if specially enabled to defy disease and live joyously.
