Three held with gold bars

SNS, SILIGURI, 25 FEBRUARY 2018: Acting on a tip -off, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested three persons and seized six gold bars weighing 3.16 kg and worth Rs 1.14 croref rom their possession on Friday.

According to DRI sources, the gold bars were being smuggled from Myanmar to Kolkata via Cooch Behar. The trio was produced in the Siliguri Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (ACJM) yesterday, from where they were remanded in three days' jail custody.

Officials of the Siliguri Regional Unit of the DRI intercepted three persons- -Nitish Debnath,48,Rupam Sen, 29, and Pradip Debnath,47, all residents of Cooch Behar, upon their arrival at the New Jaipaiguri (NJP) railway station under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police Commissionerate on Friday evening.

After thorough interrogation, DRI officials came to know that the trio was carrying gold bars from Cooch Behar and were travelling by Padatik express to deliver the yellow metal in the Sealdah area, the additional standing counsel, government of India, Ratan Banik. said.

"The bars were planned to be delivered at Bara Bazaar, BB Ganguly Street, in Kolkata. DRI got some important information that some persons are also involved in the racket," Mr Banik added.
