Sisters 'under observation'

Rabia Khatun at the hospital on Monday. (Kousik Sen)
KOUSIK SEN, TT, Feb 26, 2018,Raiganj: The two sisters who breached the security of the Bengal chief minister in North Dinajpur on February 22 are kept "under observation" at a hospital here, separated from each other ever since under watchful eyes of woman constables.

Rabia and Amira Khatun haven't been arrested or detained after the security breach during Mamata Banerjee's public meeting at Hemtabad.

"We had fallen ill after the incident on February 22. Doctors later said we are fit. But we are not being allowed to go home. It is a complete confusing situation," said Rabia.

On Monday, The Telegraph managed to speak to Rabia in a ward at the government super-speciality hospital in Raiganj. Amira is kept in another room of the ward.

"I could not meet my sister (after February 22). I appealed to doctors and nurses to let us go home. But they have not replied. Also, women police constables have been posted in both the rooms round the clock. I have no idea when I would be able to return home," she said.

Hospital superintendent Gautam Mondal said: "All we can say is that they were ill but have recovered. They have been kept under observation."

Shyam Singh, the North Dinajpur police chief, however, said the siblings were under "treatment" and no uniformed personnel had been deployed.
