Samantha Jordan visits Darjeeling
After a stopover in Siliguri, Jordan departed for Darjeeling on Tuesday.
This is her first visit to North Bengal.
"As a part of her outreach, Jordan plans to meet with leaders of the travel and tourism industry to assess the current situation and explore the tourism potential of Darjeeling" stated an official release.
Talking to media persons in Siliguri, Jordan stated that Darjeeling is a major tourist attraction for the Americans. Last year alone 1.3 million tourists travelled to India from the USA.
When questioned on a travel advisory issued by the USA from visiting Darjeeling during the four months of unrest in the Hills in 2017, Jordan clarified that there is no such travel advisory at present.
Incidentally, Jordan's visit is in continuation of US Consul General Craig Hall visit to Siliguri twice last year in July and in November when he had also visited Cooch Behar on the invitation of North Bengal Development Minister Rabindra Nath Ghosh.
Official of the US Consulate General's Consular, Foreign Commercial Service and Education USA offices had also visited Siliguri in September and had met the corporate, government officials, students and travel agents.
