Former Communist MP S P Lepcha passes away in Siliguri

Veteran Hill Communist leader diesPrashant Acharya, EOI, SILIGURI, 12 Feb 2018: Communist veteran and former Darjeeling MP S P Lepcha died today at a private nursing home in Siliguri.
Ninety-two years old Lepcha was admitted on Monday at a private nursing home in Siliguri after his pulse drastically fell down. But he died after few hours of admission and doctor’s finally declared dead at about 10 am.
Lepcha a resident of Singtam in Darjeeling was one of the founders of communist movement in Darjeeling hills and was MP in Rajya Sabha for three years in 80’s and later elected as Lok Sabha MP in 1999 till 2004. He was also served as Darjeeling district secretary of CPIM.
Saman Pathak, former communist MP said, ‘The demise of S P Lepcha has cause great loss for our party as he was the guardian of communist movement in hills. He worked with Ratan Lal Brahmin in hills to make party stronger.”
Lepcha’s dead body was brought at Siliguri CPIM party office this afternoon where Siliguri Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya, CPIM Darjeeling district secretary Jibesh Sarkar, along with other party leaders and common people paid last respect by offering flowers and garlands.
Pathak informed that Lepcha’s dead body was taken to his native place today and his last rituals will be performed on 14th February at Darjeeling.
