Duo held for extortion bid aimed at leaders
TT, Siliguri: Siliguri police on Thursday arrested two persons for sending letters to political leaders demanding money.
Dhritiman Burman and Gobinda Burman, both residents of Tufanganj in Cooch Behar district, used to stay in a rented house in Siliguri, police said.
"They had taken Rs 46 lakh from a trader in 2016 by offering him land. The duo was supposed to register the land in the name of the trader on February 20 this year. It is the bank account number of the trader that they had put in the letters and had sent it to some political persons of the city," said an official.
Among those who had received the letters, include Siliguri MLA and mayor Asok Bhattacharya, Matigara-Naxalbari MLA Sankar Malakar, BJP's Siliguri (organisational) district president Praveen Agarwal and former Trinamul MLA and doctor Rudranath Bhattacharya. All of them had informed the police.
The police have seized a printer and some other machines that the Burmans used to type the letters. Both will be produced in court on Friday, officials said.
