Darjeeling Mail extend demand
TT, Jalpaiguri/Alipurduar: The Darjeeling Mail, one of the oldest and most popular trains connecting Calcutta with north Bengal, should be extended from NJP to Alipurduar through Cooch Behar, a Bengal minister and others have demanded.
North Bengal development minister Rabindranath Ghosh has written to senior rail officials backing the demand made by many in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. Ghosh is from Cooch Behar.
However, Asok Bhattacharya, the mayor and Siliguri's CPM MLA, has opposed the demand, possibly because of fears that any extension would mean fewer seats in the train for passengers from Siliguri who board it from NJP.
The railways denied any extension plan. "We do not have any such plans," Northeast Frontier Railway additional GM Lokesh Narayan said on Saturday.
