Hill tea suffers loss in November

TT, 31 December, Siliguri: Production of Darjeeling Tea in November this year has declined by over 60 per cent compared to the same month in 2016 - the drop being attributed to delay in removing weeds from tea bushes because of the 104-day Gorkhaland shutdown.

Recent data published by the Tea Board show only 0.27 million kilos were produced in the Darjeeling hills in November, which is 61.36 per cent less than the production in the same month last year.
"Around half-a million kilos of tea (0.44 million kilos) were produced in November last year. This year, however, it has come down to 0.27 million kilos," said a tea planter based in Siliguri.
He added: "Even though the strike was lifted, production has been less in October and November. This is because most gardens are yet to remove weeds and undergrowths. We are keeping fingers crossed and waiting for the first flush of the next season."
