GNLF marks 6th Schedule 'Accord Day'

SNS, DARJEELING, 6 December 2017: The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) organized different programmes to mark 'Accord Day'- today, the day a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule in the Hills was signed by the state government, central government and the GNLF in 2005.
The events today included paying homage to their late leader Subash Ghisingh at their patty office at H D Lama Road by lighting butter lamps in front of his picture.
The Sixth Schedule was passed in the Bengal Bidhan Sabha in the year 2005 and the Delhi Cabinet had passed it in the year 2007, but just when it was about to be passed in the parliament, it faltered due to a false agitation for Gorkhaland in the Hills; a press release issued by the GNLF's Darjeeling sub-division convenor, MG Subba, said.
Mr Subba was referring to the rise of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) in the year 2007 after which the GNLF, the then ruling party took a backseat with many leaders leaving the Hills with their leader Subash Ghising."
"The Sixth Schedule will not bring about a division, but equality among the various communities here. This was the right step that Mr Ghising had taken and people are now realizing that. The Sixth Schedule is the path towards Gorkhaland,- said the press release.
Asked why no public meeting was organized, Mr Subba said, ''We are first concentrating in strengthening our party further."
