Car crash kills five

TT, Alipurduar: Five persons, including two women, died when their car collided with a truck on NH31C at Tetultala near Samuktala on Wednesday.
Four of the deceased belonged to the same family.
Sources said around 11am, a car was heading towards Assam. "Suddenly, a two-wheeler came in front of the car. The driver lost control of the car that went off the road, crossed the divider of the four-lane highway and moved to the other lane. A truck that was moving along the other lane from opposite direction rammed into the car," said a source.
Hearing the huge sound, local people ran for help and found that all those in the car were dead.
They informed police and extricated the bodies out of the mangled remains of the car.
The police also joined the rescue operations. All the deceased were residents of Dakshin Satali village under Kalchini police station of the Alipurduar district.
The deceased were Amrit Brahma, 46, his daughter Reshmi, 9, Ajit Basumata, 55, a retired policeman and his wife Istar, 50, and Bijay Sharma, 49. Amrit who was driving the car was the husband of Arati, an employee in the office of the superintendent of police here.
A. Ravindrahath, the superintendent of police of Alipurduar, also went to the spot. Mohan Sharma, the sabhadhipati of Alipurduar zilla parishad, visited the district hospital where the bodies were sent.
The local people said the stretch had become an accident-prone area. The police said in the past one year, at least 25 people had died in road accidents at Tetultala and the adjoining areas.
