Uttarbanga Utsav from Jan 22
TT. Siliguri: North Bengal development minister Rabindranath Ghosh said on Wednesday that Uttarbanga Utsav would be held in all the eight districts of the region from January 22.
Ghosh, who held a preparatory meeting with the officials on the fest at Uttarkanya , said eight eminent persons - one from each district - would be felicitated with "Banga Ratna" at the Utsav.
Uttarbanga Utsav - the annual cultural extravaganza of north Bengal - would be inaugurated in Siliguri on January 22, Ghosh informed.
"We will request chief minister Mamata Banerjee to inaugurate the event. This year, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur have been selected as theme districts for the fest. The eight-day event will also be held in Darjeeling and Kalimpong," said the minister.
At the meeting, it was also decided that the cultural programmes to be held at the fest would be held in different auditoriums and on open stages owned by the state or by local civic and rural bodies to cut the costs of pandals, sources said.
"Along with 'Banga Ratna', we will also felicitate one meritorious student from each of the 54 constituencies of north Bengal. Each of them will get a reward of Rs 10,000," said the minister.
