Three held with Rs 1cr gold bars
TT, Siliguri: The directorate of revenue intelligence seized 3kg gold bars worth nearly Rs 1 crore and arrested three persons of Maharashtra from Siliguri on Tuesday night.
DRI sources said the gold had been smuggled from Bhutan and was being taken to Maharashtra through Siliguri.
"The arrested persons are Sachin Patil of Shrigaon, Krishna Shankar Kirdat and Uttam Dilip Gujale of Vasumbey - all residents of Maharashtra. On the basis of a tip-off, a DRI team arrested them from near Tenzing Norgey Central Bus Terminus on Tuesday late night," Ratan Banik, a lawyer of the DRI, said.
Each one of them carried one kg of bars, said Banik.
"Experts verified the bars and said the trio were carrying pure 24 carat gold made in Switzerland. Its estimated price is Rs 93.10 lakh," he added.
A DRI sources said the three men were suspected to be part of an international gold smuggling racket.
