MEDIA 'CONTRAST'

TT, 25 October 2017: Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday drew comparisons between the mainstream national media in India and that in the US, highlighting how the American media had not relented in its criticism of President Donald Trump even after he won the elections.

"I regularly see how, even after his victory, the US media does not spare Trump. I see them and I see what is happening with our national media here in Delhi," the Trinamul chief told a meeting of her party's elected representatives at Nazrul Manch.

Alleging that the BJP-led Centre had forced the national media in India into submission, Mamata accused news outlets in the country of staying silent on "atrocities" of the party and its government.

"Just look at the media situation in Delhi. They (the BJP-led Centre) are controlling all of the national media, except may be one or two. Nobody can criticise them or take any action against them.... On the other hand, see what the media in the US is doing to Trump," Mamata said.

"The media situation in Bengal is a lot better. The media here can say what it wants against us and our government, a power sometimes misused. But we don't try to exercise such unjust control," she added.
