Binoy Tamang receives death threats

TH, KOLKATA, SEPTEMBER 03, 2017 : The expelled leader dared Bimal Gurung to come out of hiding and return to Darjeeling.

Days after being expelled from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, its former assistant general secretary Binoy Tamang alleged that he was receiving death threats. Challenging Mr. Gurung’s decision to expel him, Mr. Tamang argued that no one has the authority to expel him from GJM since he is a “founding member” of the party.

“I am getting death threats for the last couple of days and feel that I may meet the same fate as Madan Tamang (an All India Gorkha League leader) who was murdered 2010,” Mr. Tamang said.

Open challenge

The expelled leader dared Mr. Gurung to come out of hiding and return to Darjeeling. “It is very easy to make speeches while hiding. If he has the guts he should return,” said Mr. Tamang.

Last Friday after a meeting of senior GJM leaders, Mr. Gurung expelled Mr. Tamang who represented GJM in a meeting on August 29 with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier Mr. Gurung alleged that a section of GJM leaders “shook hands with the West Bengal government … to derail [the] movement” and did not inform him about the recent meetings they attended. Without directly mentioning

Secret meeting

Mr. Gurung alleged that the meeting between a section of GJM leaders and the Chief Minister at the State Secretariat Nabanna took place without prior consultation with him.

The rift between the two came to the fore after Mr. Tamang represented GJM in a meeting with the CM on August 29 and announced that the strike in the hills had been withdrawn.
