Leash on structures- amendments made to the West Bengal Panchayats Act, 1973,

TT, Calcutta, Aug 18: The Mamata Banerjee government today brought in several amendments to the West Bengal Panchayats Act, 1973, to ensure that illegal buildings don't spring up in rural areas.
As of now, panchayats are the sole authority to give permission and collect fees for erecting buildings in the rural areas.
The new rules engage the panchayat samity and zilla parishad - two other tiers of the panchayat system - also in the system of giving approval for buildings.
"No rural body will be able to allow alteration and changes in the building plan. The SDO can order the demolition of a building if it is found that norms are flouted," said a source
