UDGWA backs GJMM’s demand for a separate Gorkhaland in Darjeeling
The Sangai Express, July 1, 2017UKHRUL, Jun 30: In support of the Gorkha people’s movement for the demand of a separate Gorkhaland in Darjeeling, the Ukhrul District Gorkha Welfare Association (UDGWA) of Manipur conducted a peaceful protest at TNL ground Wino bazar, Ukhrul condemning the killing of three civilians in police action at Darjeeling.
During the protest, UDGWA strongly opposed the imposition of Bengali language to the Nepali speaking Gorkha community residing in the hill districts of Darjeeling by the West Bengal Government, reports our correspondent.
According to a statement of UDGWA, Chairman K Thapa demanded immediate intervention of the Central Government to resolve the issue and take up necessary steps for the welfare of the Gorkha people.
He further urged the Central Government to restore normalcy in the district without delay.
It can be recalled that the reimposition of Bengali language in the whole state of West Bengal aggravated the tense situation in Darjeeling district and when the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) took out a peace rally, they were met with the brutal force and actions from the State’s forces.
UDGWA secretary B Poidel stated that Gorkha people has strengthen the demands of GJMM for a separate Gorkhaland as Gorkha community could no longer be a part of West Bengal.
UDGWA extended their solidarity with the people and the demand to Declare Darjeeling Gorkhaland.
To mark their respect to the departed souls, the people who gathered for the protest observed a one minute silence.
Hundred of Nepalis Gorkha settling at Ukhrul participated in the protest.
