Rai board chairman resigns

TT, Calcutta, July 8: M.S. Rai, the chairperson of the Rai development board, resigned today.
Sources said Rai had put in his papers considering the "aspirations of the people of the Darjeeling hills". The sources said Rai had pledged support to the Gorkhaland movement.
Rai was the first of the chairpersons of the 16 development boards that the Mamata Banerjee government formed for various hill communities. The Rais, along with the Tamangs, are one of the largest communities in the Darjeeling hills.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had urged all the chairpersons to resign and join the statehood agitation.
