Power theft slur on tea gardens

TT, Alipurduar, May 25: The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd today filed FIRs against the managers of two tea gardens owned by the Duncans Goenka Group for allegedly stealing power.
The separate FIRs were lodged with Madarihat police against the managers of Dhumchipara and Huntapara tea estates.
Both the plantations had run up huge electricity arrears, forcing the WBSEDCL to disconnect the power supply. "Even though we had snapped electricity distribution to the two gardens, they were still stealing power for factories, offices and quarters. That is why the company lodged the FIRs," said Habibur Rehman, the Birpara station manager of the WBSEDCL.
Avaru Ravindranath, the superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said two separate cases had been registered against the manager of the two gardens.
The Trinamool Cha Bagan Mazdoor Union said both the gardens had been reopened recently after being closed for long and the cases would be added burden on the ailing estates.
