Tree protest near Lataguri, 7 detained

TT, Cooch Behar, April 6: Seven environmentalists were detained today for protesting the felling of trees on a stretch of NH31 in Jalpaiguri.
The representatives of over 20 NGOs that work for nature, environment and wildlife conservation were trying to prevent the workers of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation from cutting the trees near Lataguri and were detained by Nagrakata police.
They were released in the evening.
Sources said around 550 trees would be cut to make way for a road over-bridge over tracks in the Malbazar-Changrabandha route.
The environmentalists said they would approach the National Green Tribunal against the state's decision of cutting down trees for the construction of the road over-bridge.
