‘Gold bars worth Rs 3.47crore’ seized, two held from hotel
TNN | Apr 16, 2017, KOLKATA: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Saturday seized 70 pieces of yellow metalic biscuits believed to be gold bars of foreign origin. The biscuits weigh 11.65kg and if they are made of gold, are valued around Rs 3.47 crore.
The central agency maintained the bars were being smuggled into the country from Mynmar by two carriers from Champhai, Mizoram.
The accused persons were intercepted from a hotel near Sealdah while they were waiting in their room for delivery of those gold bars. Reportedly, a Mynmarese national delivered them the bars along with further instructions.
This year, DRI Kolkata has recovered gold bars collectively weighing 93.35kg valued at Rs 26.89 crores and arrested 29 persons, including Mynmarese nationals.
Meanwhile, the total gold seizures by DRI across the country is more than 150kg, in the last one year, with a value above Rs 60 crores.
