Land mafia blamed for closure of Simulbari tea garden

Prashant Acharya, EOI, SILIGURI, 21 Mar 2017: The Simulbari Chai Bagan Bachao Committee has alleged that Simulbari tea garden has been shut down due to encroachment by the land mafia in Malivita, a part of the estate. The encroachment has resulted in nearly 1,200 workers becoming jobless, said committee members.
Committee chairman Prakash Sanyasi and secretary Kalyan Bagdas said officials of the administration were invited several times to probe the encroachment, but apart from assurances they have received nothing. There is no initiative or action in this regard, said the senior committee members.
Sanyasi and Bagdas warned that if no action is taken in this regard by next Thursday, they would occupy the vacant land of the tea estate and also launch a massive agitation. Work at the tea garden has remained suspended since January 31 due to problems related to land encroachment in the vicinity.
