Reputation protection- guidelines to journos

TT, New Delhi, Feb. 7: The Supreme Court today said it would soon lay down guidelines for media briefing by police officers in all criminal cases in order to prevent a person's reputation from being smeared forever.
"People may be arrested... if they are shown on electronic media, their reputation is smeared forever, even though they may be acquitted later. This is a very serious issue," a bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice N.V. Ramana observed.
The guidelines are expected to cover aspects such as whether the identity of an accused can be revealed and if an accused can be openly paraded before the media.
