Rape slur on ASI

TT, Jalpaiguri, Feb. 10: A 35-year-old woman from a Raiganj village today filed a complaint at Kotwali police station here against an assistant sub-inspector of police accusing him of making false marriage promise and raping her for over one-and-a-half years.

The complaint said: "One- and-a-half years ago, the accused was posted at a police station in the district and was handling a case filed against my brother. He started visiting our house in connection with the case and assured us that my brother would not face any problem. It was then that our affair started."

Dhirendranath Burman, the accused, now posted at the record section in the district court here, said: "All the allegations are baseless."

The woman said Burman had promised to marry her and they also had a physical relation. "He used to stay at a rented house in Rajganj with his wife and he would often take me there. I got pregnant in December and when I told him about it, he forced me to have abortion tablets. He brought me to Jalpaiguri on January 29 and the foetus was aborted on February 3, " she said.

"After the abortion, both Barman and his wife assaulted me repeatedly when I insisted that he should marry me. Today, they asked me to leave their flat," the woman added.

Amitabha Maiti, the superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri, said: "A probe is on. If the ASI is found guilty, we will take strict actions against him.
