Strike held by Taxi drivers of Bengal and Sikkim
TT, Dec. 3: Taxi drivers in Bengal and Sikkim today went on strike over an unresolved issue pertaining to the movement of commercial light vehicles in the Himalayan state.
Hundreds of tourists got stranded in Siliguri and Gangtok. The strike by the taxi drivers in Siliguri was lifted later in the day and vehicles took tourists to Gangtok. The strike by the Sikkim drivers is expected to be lifted tomorrow.
The transport secretaries of the two states are slated to meet on December 5.
The strike was called because taxi drivers alleged that transport department authorities of Bengal were "harassing" drivers from Sikkim and vice versa.
