POLICE VAN DRIVER ARRESTED FOR MURDER JALPAIGURI


SNS, Jalpaiguri, 19 December: Ganesh Nayek, the driver of police van that killed one and injured five on the National Highway 31 at the New Mal area under Malbazar police station limits in Jalpaiguri district yesterday was arrested and charged under section 304,279 of IPC.
The accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri disirict court today and a jail custody for 14 days was ordered, Notably the patrol police van of Malbazar police station hit two cycles, one scooty and one motorcycle on 31 National Highway at new Mal area under Mal bazar police station in Jalpaiguri District yesterday.
The van was travelling from Bagracote to Malbazar town.
One CRPF jawan was killed on the spot and five others including the pregnant wife of the deceased were seriously injured in the accident.
All the injured persons were referred to North Bengal Medical College from Malbazar sub divisional hospital.
Immediately after the accident, the local people blocked National highway 31 and started an agitation alleging the driver of the police van was drunken.
The mob demanded examplanery action against the driver.
Police force from Jalpaiguri Police headquarter rushed to the spot to control the agitated mob on the National Highway but failed. The angry mob set the van on fire and pelted stones to the police there. Three police personnel were injured with the pelting stones.
Police detained one person in connectiion with the fire.
The detained person was released in the morning today following a road block on the same National Highway at Bagracote area under Malbazar police station in Jalpaiguri District.
Amitava Math, SE Jalpaiguri district said, "We are trying hard to maintain peace in the area. Strong action has been taken against the driver of the police van.' I personally apologize for the accident."
