Rs 1.6 crore in banned notes recovered, 4 detained

Subhro Maitra | TNN | Nov 14, 2016, MALDA: Four people were detained at Itahar in North Dinajpur and Rs 1.6 crore in 500 and 1000 rupee notes were recovered from them on Saturday night. 

A case has been started and the Income Tax department is verifying their statements and bank accounts. 

An Indica Vista headed to Raiganj from Kolkata via NH-34 was stopped by the cops around 11.30pm at Gotlu Mor near Itahar as part of a routine check. The officers found several sealed packets inside the car. On being asked, the four revealed the packets had cash. "Later, it was found that there was Rs 1.6 crore in banned 500 and 1000-rupee notes inside the packets," said police. 

The arrested persons - Manab Burman, Sanjoy Deb Burman, Madhab Sarkar and Biplab Raha -are insurance agents. They dealt in property too. 

After the ban was announced, they reportedly sold off their plots and collected the money. All four are residents of Raiganj.
