Fake Rs 100 notes may enter India through Bangla

HT, 23 Nov 2016, KOLKATA: The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has alerted BSF and NIA that fake Rs 100 notes may enter India through Bangladesh border in bulk. The alert follows inputs from an external intelligence agency that FICN operatives in Pakistan and West Asian countries would try to pump fake Rs 100 and Rs 50 notes from Nepal and Bangladesh.
The NIA through its source in Bangladesh and its counterpart, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), learnt that FICN racketeers at Monakosha in Chapai Nababgunge district are preparing to dispatch fake notes of Rs 100 and Rs 50. The middlemen involved in smuggling of FICN are desperate to cash in on the shortage of Rs 100 and Rs 50 notes. “The persons who have been arrested in FICN cases are the tip of the iceberg. The border areas in Malda and Bihar are a hub of FICN operatives.
The counterfeiters got a blow after demonetisation. Now, they want to strike back by pumping in fake Rs 100 and 50 notes,” said a NIA officer. The intelligence agencies have already alerted the security forces deployed on the border. “The FICN smugglers will try their best to recuperate their losses after demonetisation,” added the NIA officer.
