Demonetisation affects marriage plans in Jalpaiguri
Prashant Acharya, EOI, SILIGURI, 22 Nov 2016: With things going topsy turvy with the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, a man in Jalpaiguri is having a harrowing time trying to organise his daughter’s wedding.
A resident of Bhandaribari under Shikarpur Gram Panchayat of Rajganj block, Dharani Kanta Roy says his daughter’s marriage is due on November 29 but he is hapless as to how to go about preparing for the occasion. “Although the government announced the amount that can be withdrawn from banks for conducting a marriage is Rs 2.50 lakh, my bankers have refused to hand me that sum saying they have not received any circular to that effect,” Roy said, who is now crossing out a number of programmes planned for the wedding.
However, he is still optimistic the marriage ceremony will be a success. “Though the government’s move has affected my family and lakhs of others, I still support the demonetisation move,” said Roy cheerfully.
