EOI, SILIGURI, 3 Oct 2016: With the state government appreciating the initiative and garnering appreciation from the residents of Kolkata, Siliguri and Kurseong, street food chain brand MOMO ON WHEELS has now ventured into another place in the hills with the inauguration of its branch on Saturday in Mirik.
Mala Subba, chairperson of Mirik Municipality, was invited as the chief guest during the launch of the street food brand. She inaugurated the tricycle cart that doubles as a momo stall offering delicious momos.
Determined to make a revolutionary change in the region's economy, Tashi Doma Bhutia from Darjeeling and her husband Debayan Biswas dreamt of transforming society by enhancing local skills and generating employment for the deprived segment of people.
“Vegetable momos made of onion, paneer, palak, cabbage and soyabean and chicken momos are frozen and packed before being loading onto the carts. We steam the momos after receiving orders. This way they get tastier,” explained Debayan.
The husband and wife duo launched MOMO ON WHEELS a few years back to sell momos and other Tibetan dishes in Siliguri, bringing a smile to at least two dozen families who were starving as the tea gardens they were working in had shut down.
The initiative has become a beacon, an incentive to live and a cause to look forward to for people of the most backward segment of society. The duo has provided employment to workers of closed tea gardens, females from orphanages and various unskilled people.
The entrepreneurs have even received accolades at a TV reality show. The West Bengal government's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises & Textile Department in association with the Indian Institute of Management Innovation Park appreciated the MOMO ON WHEELS project at ‘Egiye Bangle’ a TV reality show on business.
“The government body and the premium institute of management has chosen us and assured to provide all necessary support for funding and grooming to promote the business idea,” said Bhutia.
The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises & Textile Department has presented the ‘Best Social Innovation in Business’ and ’40 Best Start-Up of West Bengal’ awards to the project. MOMO ON WHEELS has even bagged several national as well as international appreciations from various organisations for its innovative business style.
