Impasse over tea workers' bonus ends
HT, 3 Oct 2016, DARJEELING: The ongoing tea garden bonus impasse was finally resolved through tripartite talks at the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s Office (ALC) in Darjeeling on Saturday.
The tea gardens of Darjeeling, irrespective of category will be given 19% bonus. A meeting between the operating tea trade unions, management and the joint labour commissioner was held on Saturday and went on till late hours. The unions were demanding 20% bonus. The Management stuck to 19%.
Finally all agreed to 19% bonus. “It is a victory for us as 19% bonus will be given to workers in Darjeeling irrespective of categories. For the Terai and Dooars tea industry bonus percentages are different as per the category of the gardens, ” said Suraj Subba, General Secretary. Darjeeling Terai Dooars Plantation Labour Union, affiliated to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
