Every 6th woman in city tortured by husband

Mita's death is not an isolated case in Kolkata. One in every six women in the city is tortured by her husband, shows National Crime Records Bureau data.There have been 876 recorded cases of marital harassment in 2015, of which 15 ended in the death of the wife. Across Beng al, such cases went up from 4,025 in 2000 to 20,163 in 2015. 
In the past 48 hours, a 23 year-old Tiljala housewife Nazia Sultana, was allegedly burnt to death by her hus band while another, Namita Das, 28, was allegedly poisoned by in-laws in Baruipur. 
According to Kolkata Police's figures, there's been a 12.2% rise in torture of wives since 2000. Kolkata is third, after Delhi and Hyderabad, among metros in recording marital harassment cases.
The police say the cases reveal a distinct class divide."Such complaints are fewer from well-to-do families and those living in abject poverty .More from lower and middleincome groups are getting involved ," said a senior officer.
