Pramod Giri, HT, 13 Sep 2016, SILIGURI: Gakul Tikadar (25), notorious for his anti-social activities, was lynched on Sunday around midnight by his fellow villagers, most of them women, on the outskirts of Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur.
Gakul’s father Gurupadda Tikadar has lodged an FIR against nine persons, most of whom are women, for killing his son.
Gakul, who worked as a carpenter was associated with the TMC’s trade union wing INTTUC and was infamous for his activities in the locality. Gakul was brutally lynched by villagers about 500 meter away from his home at Abdul Ghata near Kulik forest.
Local people said Gakul used to harass women. He was recently released from jail after being arrested for his alleged involvement in the ransacking of Raiganj Sadar Hospital.
Sources said Gakul was dragged out of his home by some youths at 1.30 am on Monday. Later, he was found dead 500 meters away from his home with multiple injuries on his body. His father Gurupada said, “Gakul had returned home at 1.30 am from a cultural programme and was having dinner when he was dragged out of his room by 10 to 12 people.” Gakul has a son. Police are yet to verify Gurupada’s claim.
On Saturday night, Gakul and his group had allegedly ransacked the house of one Bacchan Mondal, who had first raised voice against Gakul’s anti-social activities.
On Sunday, a meeting was called to settle the issue. However, Gakul did not turn up and the villagers returned home. Later, Gakul and his friends reached the village on motorcycles and attempted to ransack some houses. Infuriated with this, some villagers chased them.
Though Gakul and his friends initially managed to flee, but the villagers later barged into his house and dragged him out. In a feat of anger, villagers lynched him, a police officer said. Mondal, one of the accused in the FIR lodged by Gakul’s father, is absconding.
Amit Kumar Bharat Rathod, SP, Uttar Dinajpur, could not be contacted. Gautam Chakraborty, the inspector-in -charge of Raiganj police station, said, “Gakul’s father has lodged an FIR.”
