ACCUSED DIES IN COP CUSTODY--- RAPID ACTION FORCE POSTED TO MAINTAIN ORDER IN THE AREA

SNS, Jalpaiguri, 18 September: Tension surfaced in Nagrakata after an accused died in police custody today late in the afternoon.
Bhim Bahadur Chettri (55), the deceased, was arrested by the police at about 3:30 p.m. from Sulkapara market area within Nagrakata police limits for gambling along with three others.
As revealed by sources, the accused fell ill shortly after his arrest and the police subsequently admitted him to the Block Primary Health Centre ( BPHC) at Sulkapara where doctors declared him brought dead.
The death led to unrest in the area as people from the adjacent village Khayerbari, where the deceased used to reside, gathered and gheraoed Sulkapara BPHC and pelted stones at the on-duty policemen.
The agitators alleged that the death is a result of police torture. Four assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) of police were injured in the stone-pelting and are undergoing treatment in the health centre. Rapid Action Force ( RAF) has been deployed to control the situation. The situation has not normalised as of now.
Commenting on this, superintendent of police Mr Amitava Maiti said, "Police had arrested four persons for gambling and the deceased Bhim Bahadur Chettri was one of them. However we have ordered a judicial enquiry along with a departmental enquiry so as to determine the exact cause of the death."
