NJP to get police station

TT, Siliguri, Sept. 20: The New Jalpaiguri police outpost will be upgraded to a full-fledged police station and the chief minister will inaugurate it on Thursday, senior officers of the Siliguri metropolitan police said today.
Currently, the outpost is under Bhaktinagar police station.
"The chief minister will inaugurate the police station via remote control from Kalimpong on September 22 during her (north Bengal) visit that will begin tomorrow. A proposal had been sent to the state home department to upgrade the outpost to a full-fledged police station. The state has approved it," C.S. Lepcha, the commissioner of Siliguri metropolitan police, said today.
"The new police station will have jurisdiction over the existing outpost, along with two other outposts of Milanpally in Siliguri and Ashighar on the outskirts of town (both under Bhaktinagar police station). It will function from the same building where the NJP outpost is located," she said. "Once the inauguration is done, we will take up the task of improving its infrastructure."
The police outpost is now headed by an officer in-charge of a sub-inspector rank. It also has five other sub-inspectors, 11 assistant sub-inspectors, six men and 12 women constables and 8-10 civic volunteers.
Sources said currently Bhaktinagar police station covers 323.76sqkm, including 21.8sqkm under Siliguri Municipal Corporation in Jalpaiguri district. "There are four police outposts under it. Once NJP outpost is upgraded, Bhaktinagar will have only Ambari outpost under it. Considering the rise in population in places near the SMC area, it is necessary to have a police station for NJP," a senior police officer said. "Not to mention the rise in passenger numbers at NJP railway station each year."
Officers at the Siliguri metropolitan police had sent a proposal to the state requesting the upgrade of New Jalpaiguri, Ashighar, Salbari and Ambari outposts under the police commissionerate.
"With the inauguration (of NJP police station), the number of police stations under the commissionerate will increase to six," an officer said.
