Student molested near NBU
TT, Siliguri, Aug. 18:A post-graduate student of North Bengal University has alleged that she was molested a few metres outside the campus by a biker today.
The woman had filed a complained at Matigara police station and given the number of the motorbike following which an arrest was made later in the day.
"The person behind the incident has been nabbed by Matigara police this evening," Siliguri commissioner C.S. Lepcha said. Police sources identified the youth as Ujjwal Pal, 24, who is from Matigara.
Police also found his involvement in the similar incident on the NBU campus on August 15 and some similar incidents in the university in the past.
The girl said in her complaint that she was molested in a bylane of the Shivmandir locality which is barely 500 metres from the university.
On August 15, a research scholar had alleged that she had been molested on the campus of NBU, north Bengal's biggest university, by a biker when she was returning to the hostel from her department.
The student who complained to the police today said she was returning alone to her rented accommodation from the department after attending class around 2.30pm when the incident happened.
The biker wearing a helmet was sitting on his bike parked at a bend that leads to a bylane and started following her from there.
"As I entered a lane, I noticed a biker wearing a helmet was sitting on his bike. Although the bylane has houses on either side, it was deserted around that time. I had walked some distance when the same person passed by, turned the bike at the end of the bylane and again rode back to the other end. He did this two to three times probably to make me nervous and as I figured out that he was up to something, I noted down his bike number. Finally, he slowed his bike near me, touched me inappropriately and sped away," she said.
The victim called up her batchmates and research scholars and they went with her to lodge the police complaint.
