Jalpaiguri fresher files ragging complaint

TT, Jalpaiguri, Aug. 12: A first-year under-graduate student in Ananda Chandra College today filed a complaint with the anti-ragging committee at the institute, saying he was being tortured mentally and physically by seniors in the hostel for the past 10 days.
Prabhab Dutta, a resident of Chopra in North Dinajpur, said he had been asked to do sit-ups by third-year-students at the hostel and if he refused, they would thrash him.
“I started staying at the hostel (located next to the college) on July 29. Since August 2, some third-year undergraduate students started torturing me physically and mentally at night. They would ask me to swim on the floor and force me to hold my ears and squat while verbally abusing me. If I refused, they would thrash me,” said the first-year student of political science (honours).
“I could no longer bear the torture and yesterday night, I walked out of the hostel and went to a friend’s place. I will not return to the hostel unless I am assured that I will not face torture from the seniors,” he added.
Some other freshers at the hostel said they were also facing similar torture from the seniors.
Prabhab didn’t mention anyone’s name in the complaint with the anti-ragging committee.
Third-year students who are boarders at the hostel have denied the allegations. “The allegations are baseless. Prabhab is a first-year student and is not aware of the rules and regulations of the hostel. We have just apprised him of the rules. He was never tortured mentally or physically,” a third-year student said.
Bikramjit Roy Chowdhury, a member of the anti-ragging committee and a faculty of the college, said, the panel would meet tomorrow. “We have collected some information after the first-year student filed the complaint. The complainant and the accused students have been called to the meeting. After hearing both the sides, necessary decision would be taken,” he said.
Dhiraj Mohan Basak, the college principal, could not be contacted.
Over 100 students stay at the hostel, a three-storied building. First-year students stay on the ground floor, while second-year students’ rooms are on the first floor. Third-year students stay on the second floor.
