Bengal names

TT, Calcutta, Aug. 18: The Bengal government today said the name of the state would be changed to "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi.
The government also said it would seek a consensus in the Assembly for the name change but if there was none, it was prepared to get the motion passed unilaterally. Trinamul has 211 MLAs in the 294-member House.
A two-hour discussion on the proposal will be held in the Assembly on August 29.
The names were today announced by parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee at an all-party meeting. While the BJP is against any name change, the Congress and the Left today demanded the setting up of a committee to examine the proposal.
