‘Will recruit teachers solely based on merit’- Partha

SNS | Kolkata | 01 July, 2016: State education minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday said that he won’t compromise with the quality of education and added that the time has arrived to judge the educational background before recruiting teachers in state- run schools and colleges.
Chatterjee said, “We won’t compromise on the quality of education while recruiting teachers. Teachers will be selected solely on the basis of merit.” The education minister said this will help in raising the overall quality of education. He also added that the Centre did not provide funds for eight educational projects on account of which matching grants by the state could not be provided.
According to Chatterjee, the state government is focussing on expansion, equity, excellence and performance in education sector. He added they are yet to despatch 3 lakh shoes for children studying in state-run schools. Targeting the Opposition CPI-M, he said the quality of teachers who were appointed in colleges and universities had been compromised during Left Front rule in the last 34 years.
Chatterjee also said the education department would shortly announce the appointment of 3,856 teachers who had been selected by the College Service Commission (CSC). Challenging the Opposition members in the Assembly Chatterjee on Thursday said that he will take responsibility of admitting up to ten students in the colleges if it is found that the students’ names are present in the merit list but they have not been admitted in state- run colleges.
Sujan Chakraborty leader of CPI(M) legislature party said that they had already forwarded the names of the students whose names have featured in the merit list, but have not been admitted in the state- run colleges. He will again send the list to the minister, he said.
